Miss America Kirsten
Haglund is extremely passionate about the importance of
leading a healthy lifestyle. She continues to promote this
message by sharing new information about a unique contest,
the Search for Teen Wellness Leaders. Amway Global is
searching for teens across the United States who are taking
action and leading the effort to promote wellness among
their peers and community.
The contest will recognize
one teen from each of the 50 United States and the District
of Columbia for making a positive difference. Each selected
Teen Wellness Leader will receive a $1,000 scholarship, a
$1,000 grant for his or her local YMCA, and the chance to be
featured in Newsweek.
If you know a teen wellness
leader in your community, or you are a teen wellness leader
yourself, we strongly encourage you to visit
www.inspirewellness.com.
The nomination period ends December 1, 2008 at 10 p.m. EST,
so start nominating!
Miss America commends all
of the Teen Wellness Leaders out there for their efforts in
spreading positive messages and fighting unhealthy
lifestyles. Teen Wellness Leaders play a vital role in the
future wellness of our nation and serve as exceptional role
models for today's youth. The sooner younger generations
learn to cultivate healthy habits and stay fit, the more
likely they'll be healthy and active later in life. Keep up
the good work!

This year we extended the challenge
to our state titleholders to volunteer their time for our
Make-A-Difference Day Challenge to benefit CMN. This week we
would like to share with you Lexie Overholt's efforts. Here
is what she sent to us:
Hello MAOT!
I
am so happy to report that my state of Virginia as well as
friends and family have helped me reach over $3,000 so far
in my fundraising efforts on behalf of Children's Miracle
Network Make A Difference Day.
In order to make a difference, I decided that the most
profitable and still fun way to go about this was to take
the website donation campaign and customize my appeal to the
Make A Difference Day with a raffle to generate more
interest and make it a little more fun for my donors! The
deadline for the raffle was for Saturday, October 25 - which
we extended to the 26th and we drew for 7 great prizes!
I wrote my letter and then approached people that I know and
a few businesses with the letter and asked them to be a part
of my raffle so that we can encourage donations and partner
with them as well on giving to such a tremendously important
cause.
I started with my initial letter on October 17, then on
Thursday another reminder went out as well as the Ballet
letter and then the final LAST CHANCE letter went out on
Saturday!
While working on the adult portion of this campaign for
donations, I thought it would be fun to encourage the little
girls at my studio to get involved as well, so I sent a
letter home to all of their families and asked them to help
show that DANCERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE!- which is now a
new dimension to my platform and one that I will be
promoting from this point forward. I found that Lessons with
Lexie - while so rewarding and successful here where I am -
is much too limiting in all that can be done with it - so
Children's Miracle Network has actually inspired me to take
my platform to another level - both service-wise with
volunteerism - as well as the fundraising arm. I am so happy
to have Children's Miracle Network be the very first
beneficiary of DANCERS MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
The little dancers in my studio were asked to bring in all
of the loose change they were allowed to bring in and put it
into our collection bottle at ballet. We have extended this
donation because there are still too many students who want
to participate. They too are eligible to win a raffle - our
very own BALLET BASKET OF GOODIES- for which we will
draw in one week.
Sincerely,
Lexie Overholt
Miss VA OT
Thank you Lexie for Making A
Difference in your community! We are very proud of you!

Congratulations to Miss
Pennsylvania's Outstanding teen, Julia Rae Schlucter, and
National Princess, CoCo Clemens for being spotlighted in
the City Suburban Newspaper! The girls volunteered at the
National Foundation for Celiac Awareness's event, Appetite
for Awareness.

Miss
South Dakota's Outstanding Teen, Carrie Wintle, has done
a fabulous job raising awareness and funds for Children's
Miracle Network. In addition to raising the most money for
CMN this past summer, Carrie was also the Ad Sales Winner
and received a $3,000 scholarship and $1,000 cash from our
program book designers, GranDesign. Being the role model
that she is, we have decided to feature Carrie in her own
column called Carrie's Corner. Please visit our site to read
about why Carrie is so passionate about fundraising and
giving back to the community! The direct link is

You might be the next individual we feature!

MAOT is
always excited to hear the great things that former
state titleholders are doing in their community and in their
education. We have decided that from now on, we will
celebrate their accomplishments in the email blasts!
We recently heard from Lauren Lytle, former Miss SC OT. Here
is what she told us:
This summer I had the wonderful
opportunity to crown my successor and best friend, Taylor
Fitch as Miss South Carolina Teen 2008. Little did I know, I
would be sitting in Orlando at the Miss America's
Outstanding Teen Pageant 2008 and watch her win Miss
America's Outstanding Teen 2009! I had an incredible
experience as a sorority member and especially enjoyed
watching Taylor compete and win. Since the pageant, I have
been extremely busy back in South Carolina. I entered my
freshman year at Furman University the day after I arrived
back from Orlando, and have been very involved in my school.
I am a member of the dance team and have
had the pleasure of performing at every home football game,
and am getting
ready for basketball season. I am a part of the Student
Alumni Council,
and have the opportunity to plan several events throughout
the campus to
help engage Alumni with current students. I am a reporter
for my school
newspaper and have really enjoyed the first semester of my
freshman year.
I am currently majoring in Political Science/Communications,
and have been
very involved with the 2008 Presidential Election. I had the
opportunity
to serve on the McCain campaign as a member of the Students
for McCain and
planned my school's Election night party. I had the amazing
opportunity to
attend a Sarah Palin Rally in North Carolina and enjoyed the
excitement of
a political gathering. I traveled to New York City over Fall
Break and was
interviewed on Fox News. I was able to speak about the
recent Bailout
Bill, and give a college student's opinion on the effects of
the decision.
I have had the opportunity to travel to several local
pageants throughout
my state and have been keeping in touch with many of my
MAOTeen friends.
The MAOTeen organization has truly taught me lifelong
lessons that I have
been able to demonstrate this year in countless interviews,
community
service, and academics. For that, I am forever thankful!
* The MAOT Sorority girls group is available to anyone who
has been a previous state titleholder and competed at MAOT.
It is a great way to stay connected with former friends and
titleholders as well as an opportunity to perform during the
MAOT Pageant.
